Q&A with Bryony

How did you discover Singing Mamas?

I came to this work not only as a teacher and singer, but as a mother. I had my children while living in Japan, far from my own family and support network, and experienced firsthand how isolating early motherhood can be. While there, I started a music group for babies, but really, it was also a way of bringing mothers together.

Years later, discovering Singing Mamas felt like finding the missing piece. I became a trained Singing Mamas facilitator and the first to bring the model to Vancouver and Western Canada. Unlike many baby-focused groups, Singing Mamas places the mother’s wellbeing at the heart of the experience, recognizing that when a mother feels supported, connected and nourished, that care ripples out to her baby and family.

What makes Singing Mamas unique?

My work draws on more than 20 years of teaching, alongside a lifelong background in singing, performance, yoga, dance and the healing arts. My approach is welcoming, accessible and trauma informed. I believe our voices belong to us, before we learn to judge them as “good” or “bad” just as babies instinctively use their voices freely and without self-consciousness.

Through simple songs and harmonies learned by ear, we reconnect with our breath, our voices and one another. Singing together can support the nervous system, mood and social connection, and, perhaps most importantly, it gives us a place to belong. Every voice is welcome.

I'm interested, but what if I can't sing?

You absolutely belong! Singing Mamas isn’t a choir, and you don’t need any singing experience. There are no auditions, solos, performances or music to read. We learn simple songs and harmonies by ear, together.

We all arrive in the world with a voice and an instinct to use it. Somewhere along the way, many of us become self-conscious or start believing we ‘can’t sing.’ Singing Mamas is a space to gently let go of some of that judgement and enjoy using your voice again.

Singing Mamas is a chance to find some of that freedom again: to breathe, make sound, connect with other mums and experience the joy and wellbeing that can come from singing together. You don’t need to be a singer. You just need to come as you are.
