Spotlight: Learn Babywearing

Welcome to the next edition of our monthly “Spotlight” series! Each month (or so) we will shine a spotlight on a local business that is making a positive impact on the family scene in the Lower Mainland.
This month we are featuring a new, local, woman-owned business that helps families wear their babies: Learn Babywearing
Learn Babywearing

If you’ve ever wondered what it means to “wear your baby”, this is the place to go! Using wraps and slings and carriers is not always as straightforward as it seems, and it’s so important for the health of your baby to ensure that you’re doing it properly.
Learn Babywearing is a business designed to help parents and future parents wear their babies - safely, confidently, and lovingly.

Get to know Sarah
Owner and Creator of Learn Babywearing
Sarah Labou is so passionate about babywearing that she went from wearing her own babies all the time to becoming a certified babywearing consultant and educator.
I asked Sarah a few questions about the inspiration behind this business, here is what she had to say:
Q. When did you decide to turn your passion for babywearing into a business?
A. My business started with just wanting to share my love of babywearing! I felt particularly passionate about creating a prenatal class that could give parents a chance to try different carriers, because I wish that a class like that existed when I was pregnant with my first.
Q. What is your favourite part about working with parents-to-be and new parents?
A. My favourite thing about working with parents-to-be is the excitement of what’s to come. It’s exciting to play around with wearing newborn dolls while dreaming of the future. My favourite part about working with new parents is making their life easier. Newborn days bring a lot of struggles for many parents, I can add a tool to their toolbelt so that they have fewer stressful hours of the baby crying nonstop and help them free up their hands so they can get stuff done or practice self care.
Q. What do you love most about the experience of having exclusively worn your own babies since birth?
A. I love the connection I’ve gained from wearing my babies, babies don’t keep! It’s such a short period in their life and so I really treasure the extra snuggles I got by babywearing rather than using a stroller. I also think it greatly helped my physical recovery and fitness post pregnancy/birth!
Q. What one tip would you offer to anyone interested in babywearing for the first time?
A. Just because a friend/family member/influencer loves a particular carrier or wrap does not mean that you will! If you can, I would highly recommend trying several carriers before buying your own so that you can feel what works best on your body.

More than just a business!
For Sarah, babywearing isn’t just her job, it’s her passion. She has an extensive collection of babywearing options that she uses in her workshops, giving her clients hands-on access to a variety of styles and fabrics.
She offers prenatal classes, private consultations, and newborn check-ins, and has extensive first-hand knowledge from years of babywearing her own children.
She even has a loom in her home for making hand-made woven wraps!
Learn Babywearing & Little Words Studio
Little Words has hosted several workshops by Learn Babywearing, with great success!
Parents and future parents are so happy to get personalized attention and to be able to try on a variety of babywearing options.
Sarah uses a jointed doll (and sometimes her toddler, when she is willing!) to demonstrate, giving a very realistic portrayal of how a baby’s body fits into different carriers. Having a very pregnant belly at our most recent workshop was fantastic for showing how someone can babywear right up to their delivery day!
My connection with Sarah goes back several years, when she brought her then-infant daughter to one of my Baby Signing classes. We have stayed in touch since then, and I’m so grateful to Sarah for not only supporting my business from the very beginning, but - most importantly - for painting those lovely clouds you see on the wall when you first walk into the Studio!
